Care for Postpartum Depression

Counseling, support and, in some cases, medication can help you to feel better if you have postpartum depression

A combination of stress and hormonal fluctuations makes new mothers vulnerable to depression. You may have postpartum depression if you experience any of the following signs and symptoms:
  • Baby blues that don’t go away after two weeks or strong feelings of depression and anger that begin to surface one to two months after childbirth.
  • Feelings of sadness, doubt, guilt, helplessness or hopelessness that seem to increase with each week and begin to disrupt your normal functioning. You may not be able to care for yourself or your baby. You may have trouble handling your usual responsibilities at home or on the job.
  • Not being able to sleep even when tired, or sleeping most of the time, even when the baby is awake.
  • Loss of interest in things that used to bring pleasure.
Postpartum depression is a real illness that is treatable. It is not a personal failing. You will recover. If you think you may have postpartum depression, seek counseling and support. Lehigh Valley Health Network's physicians and counselors are specially educated in treating postpartum depression. Effective counseling will help you to understand what is happening to you, identify some of the causes of the stress that you are feeling, and find effective ways for dealing with that stress. Family members also may benefit from counseling. This will help them to understand what is happening to you, and what they can do to help you recover.
If you seek counseling and your symptoms are getting worse or not improving within a week or two, consider talking with your doctor about medication. Particular types of antidepressants called “serotonin reuptake inhibitors” are usually well-tolerated and begin to work within 10 to 20 days to help you feel like yourself again.

You also may benefit from attending a support group. We offer year-round support groups for women with postpartum depression. To find a counselor trained in treating postpartum depression or to receive information about the Depression After Delivery support group, call 610-402-CARE.
